Money Is A Tool

Updated: Sep 14, 2018

Money is a tool. It's not a meant to lord over us but we are meant to master it. Much like a carpenter who masters the tools of his trade, entrepreneurs need to be diligent toward mastering the tool of money.
When I was a young teenager, I was in my room one day cutting something with a knife. My dad walked by and saw what I was doing. Offering me some sage advice he said, "That's not how you do it. You are going to cut yourself if you do it that way." Me, being the know-it-all teen that I was, rejected his wisdom. As a result of me mishandling this simple tool, I ended up cutting my hand pretty bad. My Dad, 30 years my elder, had many more years experience with this common tool. He had learned how to use it properly. I on the other hand was a complete novice. In my novice hands, this tool was dangerous. While it could be used to help accomplish certain tasks, in my hands there was a great potential for harm. This same tool, however, in my father's experienced hands was a helpful asset.
Money is a tool. It is neither good or evil. It is simply a tool that we have in our business "tool belt," that we need to master. A surgeon learns to use a scalpal. A fireman learns to use a high pressure hose. A writer learns to use a keyboard. A landscaper learns to use lawn tools. A welder learns how to use a welding machine. In the same way, a business owner needs to learn how to use money. Not just how to make it and spend it, but how to manage it.
As a business owner, how well do you manage this powerful tool? Are you still a novice? What would it take to learn how to use this tool more effectively? Are there books you can read? Are there classes you can take? Determine to become an expert with this tool that you have in your business "tool belt." (#moneyisnotevil, #moneyisatool)
